Fellow Beach Voters,
As you may know, I do not like the process whereby a majority of council members decide who fills council vacancies occurring between elections.
Now that we are have a district/ward system I am proposing a City Charter change that future council vacancies be filled by you, the voters, in a special election.
Council is now in process of appointing someone to the legacy Bayside District seat to serve through December 31, 2021. Many a good applicant could not clear the insider bias, which is why this process must give way to special elections.
I think it is important that Beach voters gain some materially relevant insight on the top three applicants selected by a majority of council members before being asked to comment on them at the August 9, 2022 City Council meeting.
To provide Beach voters and myself that insight, I crafted ten questions provided to each of the three selected applicants in the attached letters. The questions deal with issues that could be subject to a vote or council direction before the appointed applicant’s term expires on December 31, 2021. One question addresses providing voters and myself insights on what is truly a subjective judgment on external influences on their votes, should they be selected.
The answers should be forth coming on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 during the applicant interview stage.
